Medical
Exchange International, Inc. was founded in 1999
by
Dr. John M. Freedman. Having spent over two decades complementing
his full-time medical practice in the U.S.A. with volunteer
medical stints throughout the developing world, Dr. Freedman
set out to increase public participation in activities supporting
health care in developing nations.
Through its many projects, lectures,
fundraising activities, and organized health care educational
travel tours, MEI has involved hundreds of individuals in charitable
activities with a worldwide impact. MEI often partners with
other organizations such as the Pan American Health Organization,
Operation Rainbow, Global Links, The Flying Samaritans, U.S.
Exchanges, and even Baseball International to facilitate transport
of medical supplies and medical educational materials to their
destination. We also support, provide consultation for, and
contribute to the efforts of allied organizations who share
our mission, such as the
Bolivia Medical
Exchange Program.

Beneficiary health care professionals
in developing nations have been extraordinarily appreciative
of MEI’s donations. Likewise, our Health
Care & Society Tours have received
universal positive acclaim from participants who have found
these programs remarkably gratifying on many levels. Whether
it is providing textbooks for the medical library at the Kilimanjaro
Medical Center in Tanzania, a pulse oximeter and surgical equipment
for the National Institute of Ophthalmology in Vietnam, prenatal
vitamins and an ultrasound machine for a prenatal clinic in
Las Varas, Mexico, or intravenous infusion tubing for the National
Institute of Oncology in Cuba—those involved with MEI’s projects
as donors, volunteers, and/or people-to-people exchange participants
know that they are making a real difference for those truly
in need.
